Piezosurgery in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery.
2020-06-09

I am helping companion animals such as dogs, cats, and rabbits with tooth extraction using piezosurgery at a level comparable to human dentistry. This minimally invasive procedure includes tooth extraction, guided tissue regeneration (GTR), and animal dental implants.

The piezosurgery generates ultrasonic vibrations through piezoelectric means, resulting in bone cutting with less tissue damage. The advantages include :

Faster tooth extraction with less chance of residual roots, especially in cats.

Smaller wounds and less bleeding.

Easier postoperative care for owners.

Reduced risk of postoperative infections.

Decreased pain for the animals.

In traditional open extraction, wounds are larger, and sutures are required. Closed extraction, especially when extracting multi-rooted teeth, may lead to root fractures, a common issue in cats.

In human dentistry, open extraction is mainly used for impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth. However, human tooth roots have smaller bifurcation angles compared to dogs and cats, reducing the risk of fracture.

Using the piezosurgery results in smaller wounds and a lower chance of residual roots. The surgery time is shorter, especially considering the tendency for cat tooth fractures, making the differences more apparent compared to traditional extraction methods.

It is recommended to preoperatively sterilize the entire mouth before any dental surgery (including teeth cleaning). Postoperatively, analgesics, antibiotics, and antimicrobials should be administered to prevent infection.

In this case, tooth extraction using the piezosurgery took only 5 minutes for the cat, and the anesthesia care time, both pre and post-surgery, was longer than the actual surgery time.

As each case is unique, the most suitable dental surgical approach should be determined through a dental consultation.

Starting from July 4, 2020, we are open for appointments every Saturday for consultations and surgeries.

To ensure medical quality, we cannot accommodate too many dental consultations and surgeries each day. Dental consultations typically require 30 minutes to an hour. Owners, please make sure to set aside sufficient time for your animals.

For follow-ups on cat cases after completing the MGRS treatment for stomatitis (feline chronic gingivostomatitis, FCGS), you can find detailed information on the official website under “Mucogingival Replacement Surgery (MGRS) Healing Cases of Stomatitis in Cats and Dogs”:

Future updates on the website and Facebook will provide information on new developments and applications in veterinary and human dentistry. We are dedicated to promoting the concept that “veterinary dentistry is surgery”, allowing people to better understand oral health maintenance for both humans and their animals and reinforcing educational efforts in veterinary dentistry.
