Follow-up on a cat case six months after the completion of Mucogingival Replacement Surgery (MGRS) treatment
2020-04-06

A 9-year-old male tabby cat carrying Feline Calicivirus, weighing approximately 8.2 kg before treatment.

March 2, 2019:

Before seeking treatment from Dr. Chung-Wei Chen, the owner had attempted various internal medicine treatments for the cat's feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) without success. Despite a partial tooth extraction (with no residual roots found upon dental X-ray examination) at another hospital, the cat's gingiva and oral mucosa continued to swell, and inflammation persisted. The cat's appetite remained poor.

Dr. Chung-Wei Chen performed the clinic's unique Mucogingival Replacement Surgery (MGRS) for the tabby cat: removing the inflamed gingiva and oral mucosa and allowing healthy gingiva and oral mucosa to regrow.

October 12, 2019:

The MGRS treatment concluded, antibiotics and analgesics were discontinued. The swelling in the cat's mouth had almost completely disappeared. The weight continued to increase to 9 kg, the fur became shinier, and the cat's vitality improved, even beginning to assert dominance over other cats in the household.

April 3, 2020:
Six months after the completion of the treatment (including cessation of painkillers and antibiotics), the owner brought the tabby cat back for a follow-up from Taipei. The gingiva and oral mucosa condition remained excellent, and the weight increased to 10 kg (as shown in the picture, equivalent to placing two oranges on its back).

Concepts to be updated in veterinary dentistry (or animal dentistry, pet dentistry):

※Dentistry is essentially surgery.
Tooth extraction is the last resort; preserve animal teeth whenever possible.
Cats undergoing Mucogingival Replacement Surgery (MGRS) should pay extra attention to dental and oral hygiene, including regular brushing.
