[Added on August 09, 2023] No extraction, Mucogingival Replacement Surgery (MGRS) heals 3-year-old orange tabby male cat with chronic feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS).

Peng-Peng is a neutered mixed-breed orange male cat suffering from severe feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS). His owner brought him to our hospital to undergo Dr. Chung-Wei Chen (Richard Chen)'s innovative MGRS for FCGS treatment. At the beginning of the treatment, Pang-Pang was 2 years old, and upon completion of the MGRS, he turned 3 years old.

Peng-Peng's FCGS caused severe redness and swelling in his gingiva and oral mucosa, extending all the way to the posterior part of his mouth. This led to significant pain, difficulty swallowing, and a severe impact on his appetite.

After one year of MGRS treatment, Peng-Peng's FCGS was completely cured, and Dr. Chung-Wei Chen (Richard Chen) successfully preserved all of his teeth. Three months after completing the treatment, Peng-Peng maintained a good appetite, had excellent mental vigor, and his weight increased from 4.5kg to 5.2kg. He could resume a normal life without the need for injections or medication.

Although Peng-Peng's FCGS was successfully treated, he still requires daily tooth brushing and regular scaling to maintain good oral hygiene, ensuring his oral health and preventing periodontal disease.

In some cats treated with MGRS, one might observe some new pigment deposition in the newly healed tissues, including gingiva, oral mucosa, and scar tissue, resulting in some differences in the pigment deposition areas between before and after treatment photographs.

Dr. Chung-Wei Chen (Richard Chen)'s Mucogingival Replacement Surgery (MGRS) is based on the principle of replacing scar tissue and collagen proteins in the inflamed area of the cat's mouth. With Dr. Chung-Wei Chen (Richard Chen)'s extensive clinical experience and unique medical techniques, he ensures that the scar tissue does not present any challenging extension issues. Consequently, the cats with cured FCGS can maintain excellent oral functionality and experience complete healing.

Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is one of the common oral diseases in cats. The main symptoms are:
1.     The gingiva and oral mucosa are red, swollen, ulcers or hyperplasia. All soft tissues in the mouth, including the gingiva and all parts of the oral mucosa (including buccal, lingual, sublingual and oropharynx, etc.), will have redness, ulceration or hyperplasia.
2.     Cats will lose their appetite or even refuse to eat because of mouth pain, or they will keep shaking their heads and scratching their mouths with their front feet when eating and drinking.
3.     The patient's saliva usually has a peculiar smell, even putrefactive odor, due to ulcers.

At present, the most common treatments are long-acting steroid injections or oral steroids, combined with antibiotics, and tooth extraction, etc., but the effect of individual treatment varies greatly, furthermore, tooth extraction will likely cause the cat's oral cavity to collapse and alveolar bone loss. They need lifelong medication and can't stop it.

Dr. Chung-Wei Chen's original Mucogingival Replacement Surgery (MGRS) aims to solve the above-mentioned sequelae and difficulties in the treatment of stomatitis, and make cats with FCGS no longer need to take medicine for a long time after recovery, and return to the normal life they had before the illness.
