The gingival overgrowth and malocclusion in the Maltese dog result in the teeth being covered.

“Qi-Zai” is an 11-year-old female Maltese dog.

During scaling, we found that the bilateral mandibular first to third premolars (305~307, 405~407) of the patient had gingival hyperplasia and malocclusion, and the teeth were over-covered by gingiva, after gingivoplasty at our hospital, these teeth of the patient can be seen again.

Gingival hyperplasia is one of the common oral lesions in dogs. It will cause plaque to easily accumulate in the hyperplastic sulcus, leading to gingivitis or periodontal disease, surgery (such as gingivectomy) is required, and regular follow-up is required after treatment , confirm whether gingival hyperplasia recurs again.

In this patient, she suffers from malocclusion and gingival hyperplasia at the same time, which will cause plaque to easily accumulate in the gingival sulcus and  the gaps between the teeth, which will increase the probability of periodontal disease, in addition to daily tooth brushing and regular scaling, it is recommended to follow up treatments, such as gingivoplasty, orthodontics, and serial extraction, so as to effectively prevent periodontal disease and maintain good oral health.
