Current owners are aware that dogs also need exercise to maintain their physical health. However, did you know that improper exercise not only harms muscles and bones but can also lead to dental and periodontal injuries?

The periodontal ligament (PDL), located between the tooth and the alveolar bone, plays a crucial role in stabilizing teeth and providing cushioning during biting on hard objects.

Many owners engage in activities such as tug-of-war with toys or items like balls, frisbees, towels, etc., as a playful exercise for their dogs. Dogs often enjoy these games of chase and tug, providing entertainment for both parties.

However, these tugging movements continuously impact the periodontal ligament (PDL), and dogs may not control the force applied. Besides the risk of tooth fractures, prolonged exposure to these actions can lead to Sprained Tooth Syndrome or bruised teeth. Symptoms include inflammation of the periodontal ligament, pain, infection, bleeding gums, loose teeth, and even tooth loss. If a dog already has periodontal disease, these tugging activities can increase the likelihood of tooth loss.

Damaged periodontal ligament (PDL) take time to heal gradually. If you observe signs of Sprained Tooth Syndrome in your dog, the best treatment is to allow the teeth to rest adequately. This involves avoiding tugging and chewing on hard objects, using medication to control infection and inflammation, and sometimes checking for any bite issues. Surgery may exacerbate the pain symptoms and is not typically a priority treatment option unless accompanied by other conditions such as periodontal disease or malocclusion.

Furthermore, since tug-of-war games can wear down enamel, dogs with Sprained Tooth Syndrome often experience severe tooth abrasion, and in some cases, exposure of the dental pulp. As dogs lack the ability to control force, it's advisable to minimize games or activities involving tugging to prevent the risk of early tooth loss.
