Gingival retraction is a procedure that allows the gingiva to be a little bit away from the teeth during the treatment. Usually we put a gingival retraction cord into the gingival sulcus and then taken out after the treatment is over.
The purpose of gingival retraction:
1. Make the tooth shape more clearly, so that the production of denture, crown or bridge will be more accurate, reducing the discomfort or occlusion problems after installation.
2. Reduce the probability of the gingiva damage during the operation of the instrument or drill.
3. Gingival retraction cord has the function of stopping bleeding. Using the retraction cord before surgery can also reduce the " badly mutilated " in the surgical area. However, in my experience, if your patient has severe periodontal disease, it only brings little help.

排齦(gingival retraction)是在牙科治療時，讓牙齦稍微離開牙齒一點距離，通常會在牙齦溝中塞入排齦線(gingival retraction cord)，等治療結束時再取出。排齦的目的如下：
1. 讓齒型的邊緣更清楚，讓印模後製作出來的假牙(denture)、牙冠(crown)或牙橋(bridge)等能夠更準確，減少裝上去後的不適感，或咬合問題。
2. 可以在治療中，減少器械或鑽針在操作時誤傷到牙齦的機率。
3. 排齦線具有止血的功能，在手術前先使用排齦線，也可以減少術區「血肉模糊」的狀況，不過就我的經驗，如果牙周疾病很嚴重的病患，可能幫助有限。
